Hey,
So, yes I’m a writer and author, and it really does occupy a lot of my time. Out of pure love–writing has always helped center me, given me a hideaway to shut out the real world, and my own internal virtual playground.
However, having said that, you also have to make time for other things. Remember what happened to Jack Torrenz? 😉
Some days you devote time to other things…and it’s a GOOD thing. A necessary thing. Spending time away from your passions breathes new life and perspective into them. It also gives you opportunities to reenergize.
I know. If you’re an Indie author there are endless things you could and should be doing. All the time. It can get stressful and overwhelming. I’m sitting here thinking about all the things I haven’t done or have put off because there just aren’t enough hours in the day and I get anxious too. Too many things for one person to juggle.
But. First you have to realize–while yes, for some things there ARE timetables, most of them are internal time tables. I want to get these stories finished by “x” or I want to create this spreadsheet and resolve these items…and so on. But, again, you gotta gotta gotta take breaths now and again or you will hit burnout. And then you shut down.
Been there.
So, whatever your other fav things are, take a night off and do them. Even if it’s just sitting on your butt watching movies. Or gardening. Or playing an instrument. Go give those things life too because it will keep you fresh for your more daunting tasks.
And do it regularly. Weekly. Even if it’s just a couple of hours here and there. Do it.
It’s like getting a huge breath after diving under the water and getting back to the surface. Really.
So, what am I going to do for my breathers? Tonight, I’m going to play Minecraft because I just find that silly, simple game relaxing and enjoyable. Then, this weekend I’m toddling off to a Cryptid Con. Not to sell books, not to do anything related to my writing but just go bask in cryptids and creepies with my wife and a group of awesome friends I met only a couple of years ago. All weekend.
When I get back, then it’s back to work but until then, I’m not doing anything (well, I’ll take a notebook for ideas that surface, but that’s it!).
I will give one plug while I’m here too. Project Threshold Season 2 is out as a compendium like the first: Project Threshold: Season II: Closing Dark Doors. You can find it here:
